Do you hesitate to visit the dentist because of dental anxiety? With Access Health dental, we don’t want your oral health to suffer, which is why we offer comfort dentistry options. If you’re nervous about a dentist appointment, we can provide a sedation option that will help you feel relaxed and comfortable during your visit.
Oral Conscious Sedation
The number one thing to know about sedation dentistry is that it does not knock you out. There is no long-term grogginess, no possibility of allergic side-effects or bad reactions, and it does not replace the regular anesthetics or procedures in any way.
Conscious sedation means just that. You are slightly sedated during the procedure and will be conscious the entire time. This sedation allows your muscle tension to relax, your dental anxiety to lower, and any physical difficulties such as a strong gag reflex to be toned down.
Oral conscious sedation is taken before the appointment and will last until a little after the appointment. Be sure that you have a ride to and from your appointment.
Laughing Gas
Laughing gas has been safely used in dental procedures since the late 1800s. It is time-tested and patient-approved.
Laughing gas comes in a gaseous form, which means no needles. It is mixed with a healthy supply of oxygen, then breathed in through a small mask placed over the nose. As long as the mask is running, the laughing gas will continue its calming effect.
Laughing gas is a natural anxiolytic, which means that it reduces anxiety. For any of those who suffer from nerves or panic at the thought of a dental procedure, this is great news. It is also a natural anesthetic. We do not, however, use it to replace the traditional numbing agents. It’s simply an added bit of comfort.
This form of sedation works almost immediately after turning the mask on. Even better than that, its effects end just as quickly when the gas is stopped. The reason for this is that laughing gas does not metabolize inside the human body. Within a few minutes after the dental procedure, the gas will be entirely gone. No grogginess. No lingering side-effects. You can safely and legally drive yourself home after your appointment.
